Comparing harvest potentials across a mixed ruminant herd? This highly specialized tool takes a goat's metric hanging carcass weight (kg) and calculates what the equivalent-sized sheep's raw wool yield (kg) would be. The multiplier is exactly 0.1111.
The 1-to-9 Biological Ratio
While goat meat and sheep wool are entirely different products from different species, they both represent fixed biological percentages of their respective live animal weights. By comparing those percentages, we find a direct mathematical link.
1. The Goat Carcass
A meat goat yields approximately 45% (0.45) of its live weight as a hanging carcass.
2. The Sheep Wool
A sheep yields approximately 5% (0.05) of its live weight as raw grease wool.
The Mathematics
5 ÷ 45 = 0.1111
Because 5 is exactly 1/9th of 45, the sheep's wool yield will always be exactly 1/9th the weight of the goat carcass (assuming identical starting live weights).
