Understanding Dressing Percentage
The dressing percentage represents the proportion of the live animal that remains as a carcass. While 50% is a standard industry baseline for sheep, several factors can cause this to fluctuate between 45% and 55%.
Factors Affecting Yield
- Fleece weight: A heavily wooled sheep will have a lower dressing percentage because the fleece contributes to live weight but is removed from the carcass.
- Gut fill: Animals recently fed have higher live weights, lowering the calculated yield percentage.
- Fat scoring: Well-conditioned (fatter) sheep generally dress out at a higher percentage.
