Lbs/1,000 sq ft to Ounces/yd²

Need imperial micro-precision for a research plot, hand-seeded area, or spot treatment? This tool takes a standard residential turf rate (lbs per 1,000 sq ft) and scales it down to the exact ounces required per square yard. The multiplier is exactly 0.1439.

Zooming in on the Imperial Grid

When zooming in from a large 1,000 square foot plot down to a tiny 3x3 foot square yard, we must also change the unit of mass to keep the measurement usable. Here is how the math works in the background.

1. The Mass Shift

First, we break the pounds into ounces. Since there are exactly 16 ounces in a pound, 1 pound applied per 1000 sq ft is the same as 16 ounces applied per 1000 sq ft.

2. The Area Decrease

A square yard is 3 feet by 3 feet, or exactly 9 square feet. Therefore, a 1,000 square foot plot contains exactly 111.111 square yards.

The Final Equation

16 ÷ 111.111 = 0.1439

By multiplying your starting rate by 0.1439, you find the exact ounce concentration per single square yard.
